Who and What a Christian Really Is Part 6 – Sons of God

Now what does this mean? To be the son of God. This is way too powerful and I really hope you understand it.
Now over the years I’ve read so many commentaries from so many different authors and sometimes even ministers who believe that our righteousness is legal and never really took the time to understand that it’s more than just that.

What do I mean?

When we talk about being Sons of God many Christians still believe that what the Bible really means is that we are sons who have been adopted by God and many use Ephesians 1:5 as there point of reference as well as a few others. Now that right there is a mistake because what they, as well as of all us, need to understand is that the legal aspect of redemption is what made the vital experience of eternal life possible. The righteousness we have isn’t just a legal righteousness, we have a vital righteousness too. But many people don’t really understand the true meaning of righteousness.

Righteousness is the nature of God; it is the rightness of God in the human spirit; it is the quality of conformity to truth; or the revealed divine will. It is the ability in the human spirit to do right. Righteousness is the ability to stand before God without guilt, inferiority, or condemnation. And you know what? We’ve got that—we were given that righteousness as a gift: all of this was given to us a gift.

“For is by one man’s offence death reigned (like a king) by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.”
—Romans 5:17

Did you see that? It’s a gift; the Lord has given us his righteousness as a gift hence we have the ability to stand in his presence without guilt, condemnation, or inferiority; we are now the same class of being as God himself: would anyone else please believe that; to be in the same class as God? What it must mean for God himself to have poured the whole of himself into us; making our physical bodies his temples.
He says we are bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:20), this is the legal aspect of our son-ship. But there is a vital aspect of our son-ship:

“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.”
—1 Peter 1:23

This alone should remove all fear from you. You ought to be bragging about it immensely; think about it, what it must mean to be born of God? You ought to be bragging “I am born of the word of God”, “I have the life of God (Zoe) in me”, “I am not an ordinary person”, thank God that you’re not ordinary. Have that consciousness in you every day of your life.

John had this mentality and no wonder he cried out:

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God…”
—1 John 3:1

Then as though he wasn’t even done yet he continues on to say:

“Beloved, now (not tomorrow brothers and sisters) are we the sons (Greek “Teknon”) of God…”
—1 John 3:2

How wonderful it is to be called a “Son of God”; to have that mentality that you are the Son of God.

THE TEKNON OF GOD

Now that Greek word “Teknon” translated “sons” means we are born of him (vital son ship). When talking of adoption we are dealing with another Greek word “Huiothesia” meaning “adoption as a son” or “a placing as a son”.
So in the scripture above John is saying it’s not in the future that we will become the sons of God, he is saying NOW are we the sons of God—NOW! Hence if you are born again you are already a son of God both legal and vital.

“Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying ‘Abba! Father!’”
—Galatians 4:6

Do you understand it now—no, better yet: do you believe it now? You are a son of God; a bona fide son of the most high.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A SON OF GOD?

When we talk about being children of God I’m not referring to the Greek Demi-gods who were half man and half god. Definitely not like that, what we have is of way greater quality.

Being a son of God doesn’t mean you are half man and half god. In order to illustrate this let’s have this as an example:
As creatures appear in nature, when a pig gives birth its offspring are pigs by nature too, isn’t that so? Thus they bare the same characteristics as their parent (in structure, appearance, functionality—everything about the offspring resembles the parent). Similarly with all other classes of animals here on earth, right?

Now there is no difference in terminology when the Scripture refers to us as Sons of God. It means we should look, function, talk, walk, think, act, and live exactly like our parent in any and every way.

The problem that most Christians face is that we try to act like, and think, we are of the same nature as the rest of the world. Now that’s exactly the same as the offspring of any other creature (a cat for instance) trying to bark like a dog or trying to walk on two legs like a man. It doesn’t work that way. And that’s why most Christians live a life of lesser glory than they ought to, because they try taking up the nature of humans when they are a different breed or class of being.

“In this, love is perfected with us (Christians) so that we (Christians) may have confidence in the day of judgement, for we (Christians) are (past tense) as He (God) is in this world (not when we get to heaven).”
—1 John 4:17

We are like God in any and every way and hence share the same characteristics as him, thus we ought to function like him every waking moment of our lives and not just sometimes. Remember humans give birth to humans; God gives birth to, not gods, but Gods. Many think the “god” that we are is the one that is classified with a lower case “g” and that’s unfair to think because you’re depriving yourself the liberty to think of yourself as the kinda person you really are.

“I have said, ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most high.”
—Psalms 82:6

Now the word translated “gods” there is the Hebrew word “Elohim” which is the plural word used to refer to God (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit).

CONCLUSION

So that’s pretty much it ladies and gentlemen; that’s number six on our list marking the end of our discussion.

There is no other way to have this except by becoming Christians. Christianity is not just a religion. Simply believing in God and in Jesus DOES NOT make you Christian.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.“—Romans 10:9

Paul tells us exactly how to become Christian. He says you need to believe that God raised Jesus from the dead, and you need to confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord. If you have never done this then you have not Christian no matter how often you go to church and no matter how good a person you are. So, right now, if you’re reading this and wish to give your life to God and become a Christian, repeat this prayer below out-loud to yourself wherever you are,

“O Lord, God,

I believe with all my heart in Jesus Christ, Son of the living God.

I believe He died for me and God raised Him from the dead.

I believe that He’s alive today.

I confess with my mouth that Jesus Christ is the Lord of my life from this day.

Through Him and in His Name, I have eternal life; I am born again.

Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul!

I’m now a child of God. Hallelujah!”
